BrJ Sports Med 1997;31:102-108 Role of ankle taping and bracing in the athlete
نویسنده
چکیده
Adhesive tape is often used to help athletes recover from ligament sprains ofthe ankle or to prevent further injury. The choice of taping technique or material is often decided by personal preference, superstition, or anecdote. More recently, the use of ankle braces has become more prevalent, but reasons for their use are similarly variable. As ankle sprains are a major cause ofan athlete's disability and time off sport, the choice ofthe method ofsupport should be more scientifically reasoned. This paper attempts to review the literature concerning the effects of various methods ofankle support on swelling, stability, range of movement, proprioception, muscle function, gait, and performance tests. There is still some contradiction in the literature about the effects of taping and braces in both the acute and chronic phases of ligament sprains ofthe ankle. (Br J Sports Med 1997;31:102-108)

Effect of ankle taping or bracing on creating an increased sense of confidence, stability, and reassurance when performing a dynamic-balance task.
CLINICAL SCENARIO Ankle taping and bracing are commonly used to reduce the risk of sports-related ankle sprains. Mechanical- and neuromuscular-control facilitation has been the focus of their effectiveness. Another potential advantage to using ankle taping or bracing is an increased sense of confidence, stability, and reassurance that the individual may experience when performing a dynamic-bala...

Carotid artery trauma is a known cause of stroke in young people. The vessel may occlude, dissect or shower thrombotic emboli into intracranial vessels. This paper reports the use of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging in a 29 year old man who developed an embolic stroke after neck holding manoeuvres at a martial arts class. Awareness of the potential consequences of thes...
متن کاملLanding in netball: eVects of taping and bracing the ankle
Objectives—To investigate the eVect of bracing and taping on selected electromyographic, kinematic, and kinetic variables when landing from a jump. Methods—Fifteen netball players performed a jump, so as to land on their dominant limb on a force plate. Electromyographic activity was recorded from the gastrocnemius, tibialis anterior, and peroneus longus muscles. Subjects were also filmed and me...
متن کاملAnkle taping and bracing for proprioception.
BACKGROUND Ankle injuries account for up to 20% of sports-related injuries, of these 33–73% are sprains, most commonly of the lateral ligament complex. This high incidence and the functional consequences ensure that patients with ankle sprains present frequently to sports medical practises. The serious consequences of a sprain include ongoing instability and recurrence, although it is unclear a...
